Title: Why We Make Mistakes
Authors: Joseph T. Hallinan
Summary:
In this book the author talks about the mistakes people make and why they make them. The book covers a very large amount of reasons from the fact that we view ourselves in a more positive light then we should to the fact that we think the grass is always greener on the other side. In each chapter he discusses a particular reason and gives several examples of this happening in real life, such as a bus driver running into a bridge because he was on the phone and was completely oblivious to both the sign warning of the bridge and the bridge itself. In the conclusion to the book, the author gives advise on how to avoid making so many mistakes. Perhaps the most emphasized advise is to think small and be happy.
Discussion:
This was one of my favorite books that we read this semester. All examples were very entertaining and thoroughly explained. By knowing why people make mistakes we can try to design user interfaces which mitigate opportunities for mistakes to be made. This is particularly important in the books chapter on constraints. I also enjoyed that the takeaway message for the book was to be happy. This book is a funny and uplifting take on something as disheartening as mistakes.
