Ethnography Results: Week 3
This week we made a very interesting discovery about personal space in an elevator. It seems that the more people are crammed into an elevator, the more willing you are to let people invade your personal space. I came upon this realization through a fateful trip in the Richardson elevator. The elevator was completely packed and I therefore had some guy really close to me. I didn't mind because I knew he had no where else to go and we were all uncomfortably close. Eventually people got off the elevator before his or my spot which freed up some room in the elevator. However, the guy still didn't move. I immediately became uncomfortable and thought there was something wrong with the guy. The interesting thing is that he was no closer than he was a few seconds ago, but because the environment of the elevator had changed my tolerance for the invasion of my personal bubble had changed too. I am interested to see what other reactions I can find that are unique to elevators.
