Title: Exploring Mobile Technologies for the Urban Homeless
Authors: Christopher A. Le Dantec
Venue: CHI 2010
Summary:
In this paper, the author discusses possible means of aiding the homeless through mobile devices. The author believes that by using mobile devices homeless people could be more aware of places such as homeless shelters that might aid them. The paper discusses his proposed ethnography to discover exactly how the homeless would interact with mobile devices. He believes his research may aid the homeless as well as advance our knowledge of how different groups interact with mobile devices.
Discussion:
While I do believe that the authors heart is in the right place, I can not see this being very successful. I do not see why the homeless person would not immediately sell the phone in order to by food. Any homeless person with substance abuse could also simply sell the phone to obtain more of the substance. In my opinion mobile devices are a luxury and any rational person would sell a luxury to get a necessity.
