Title: Robotany: Breeze
Authors: Jill Coffin
Venue: CHI 2010
Summary:
In this paper, the author describes Breeze, a robotic Japanese maple tree. The tree would move when aware of human presence and the purpose of its creation was to observe human interaction with the tree. The author found that people interacted with the tree very physically and friendly. People passing by would dance in front of the tree and talk to it. They would also do things such as blow the tree kisses. The author also shortly describes movies in which people respond similarly to trees.
Discussion:
While I could not think of any practical reason to create a giant robot tree, this project just seemed really fun and amazing. I would absolutely want to by a scaled down version of a robotic tree that would respond when I am in my room. This also shows that not all projects have to solve a problem to be very interesting. I assume people engaged with the tree similarly to how they would a pet.
